The landscape of crypto exchanges never stops changing | Opinion

Do you recall the state of crypto exchanges back in 2017? I entered the crypto space at that time, and crypto exchanges were entirely different from what they are today. They offered a bad user experience, had poor website engines, lacked mobile applications, and had almost no investment products or trusted methods to buy crypto.  Blockchain market in 2017 | Source: CB Insights Looking at it from today’s perspective, the experience with cryptocurrency exchanges in those years was extremely clunky. And, let’s not even start talking about the capabilities of the first generation of decentralized exchanges (DEXs). 3 Satoshi Era Bitcoin wallets transfer $230M in BTC after 6-year dormancy

Over the course of 2023, several Satoshi-era Bitcoin wallets have risen from dormancy to transfer their BTC to a new address. Three Satoshi Era Bitcoin (BTC) whale addresses that have been dormant since November 2017 transfer red 6,500 BTC, estimated to be worth $230 million, on Nov. 2. Satoshi Era BTC refers to the very early stage of Bitcoin network when it was still relatively unknown. According to data from Bitinfocharts, the first wallet moved 2,550 BTC, estimated to be worth $90 million. A second address moved around 2,000 BTC worth $71 million, and the third address transfer red around 1,950 BTC worth $69 million. All three wallets had another thing in common, i.e., the last transaction from all three wallets came on Nov. 5, 2017, nearly six years ago. Thus, these wallets slept through the Bitcoin bull run and the all-time high of over $69,000. Most of the Bitcoin in the three whale wallets dates back to July 2011 and is linked to F2Pool, a Bitcoin mining pool, suggesting...

Pay-to-use blockchains will never achieve mass adoption

Image
Blockchain projects should learn from Google and Facebook by monetizing their users without directly asking for their money. Pay-to-use blockchains are done. Not for us, of course — the nerdy crypto crowd. We’re perfectly happy to open wallets, engrave seed phrases on steel cards we bury in the ground, find exchanges we haven’t been blocked from yet, wrap some assets to leverage yield, and become OpSec professionals while we pray to the blockchain gods that the North Koreans aren’t online right now. We’re fine with this. Years of experience have dulled the pain. But the mass adoption we all hoped for? It relies on the 99% of people who have zero appetite for such trauma. Related: An ETF will bring a revolution for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies If permissionless blockchains are to become the backbone of our online experiences, three major changes need to happen: They need to become free. They need to become frictionless. They need to become familiar. “Free” means free for the us...

Image
On the latest episode of “Macro Markets,” Marcel Pechman explains the potential implications for crypto of the Federal Reserve losing $100 billion. On this week's episode of “Macro Markets,” Cointelegraph analyst Marcel Pechman delves into a thought-provoking discussion on the United States Federal Reserve’s financial woes. Pechman opens by highlighting how the Fed is grappling with staggering losses and emphasizes a fundamental macroeconomic principle: that overall wealth cannot be universally enhanced as demand for goods and services grows. This discrepancy underscores the challenges posed by inflation, real estate prices and the consequences of the Fed’s policies. Pechman concludes that the Fed is now paying the price for its loose monetary approach during the pandemic, prompting a grim outlook for the U.S. Treasury Department’s finances. Shifting gears, Pechman moves on to discuss European markets, with a spotlight on Novo Nordisk’s remarkable ascent. The Danish pharmaceutical...

‘Bitcoin Jesus’ says Ethereum is the front-runner for global crypto adoption

Image
Roger Ver said that Ethereum, not Bitcoin, will lead the most new users to crypto. Early Bitcoin (BTC) investor and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) advocate Roger Ver claimed that Ethereum, not Bitcoin, will be responsible for driving the bulk of new users towards crypto .  On a May 31 episode of the Show Me The Crypto podcast, Ver — labeled “Bitcoin Jesus” for his early Bitcoin advocacy — said that despite Ethereum’s scaling issues and the other layer-one “clones” that have popped up in its wake, the Ethereum ecosystem is still where the action is: “Even though Ethereum doesn’t have the biggest market cap compared to Bitcoin, I think Ethereum is the front-runner in terms of driving worldwide adoption.” Ver praised the rise of Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible (EVM) blockchains and layer-2 scaling solutions such as Polygon (MATIC) that can help share some of the load away from the main chain. Ver provides an account of the “civil war” that occurred in the early days of Bitcoin between Etheruem’...

Human ID project ‘Worldcoin’ launches gas-free wallet only for humans

The wallet relies on “World ID,” a protocol that verifies humanness through zero-knowledge proofs. Worldcoin, a project to identify human s and distinguish them from artificial intelligence, has launched a gas-free crypto wallet for verified human s, according to a May 8 announcement.  The new wallet, called “World App,” works on Android and iOS operating systems. It currently runs on the Polygon (MATIC) network, allowing users to hold and transfer United States Dollar Coin (USDC), Dai (DAI), Ether (ETH), Worldcoin (WDC) and Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC). World App uses the project ’s “World ID” system to discriminate between human s and bots. Users who want to take advantage of gas-free transfers must first register for a World ID by supplying a phone number or iris scan. Developers say the project doesn’t store users’ data. Instead, it generates a zero-knowledge proof to verify the user is human , but without revealing the data used to generate the proof. Even users who don’t have a W...

Blur introduces NFT perpetual lending protocol

Borrowing positions automatically roll their expiry, and can be refinanced should one party unilaterally decide to terminate. On May 1, nonfungible tokens marketplace Blur launched Blend, a peer-to-peer perpetual lending protocol that supports NFT collateral. Developed with venture capital firm Paradigm, developers cite Blend's rationale as a means of "financialization to scale." 4/ Every trillion dollar market relies on financialization to scale. NFTs are no different. Instead of paying $1m for a house, buyers put $100k down and pay the rest through their mortgage. Without this mechanism, almost no one would be able to afford homes. pic.twitter.com/4J96G3pGnJ — Blur (@blur_io) May 1, 2023 Blend has neither oracle dependencies nor expiries, allowing borrowing positions to open indefinitely until terminated. Developers also claim that the protocol would collect zero fees from borrowers and lenders: "Blend matches users who want to borrow against their nonfungi...
